Rasam for cold and Fever recipe / Pepper cumin rasam









This rasam is ideal for cold winter days and a home remedy for cold, cough and fever. Eaten with a bowl of hot  rice, it's a comfort food.

Ingredients


Whole peppercorns - 1 tsp

Cumin seeds - 1 tsp

Tamarind - 1 tbsp
Jaggery, grated - 1 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Curry leaves -10
Coriander leaves, chopped - 1 tbsp

Tempering

Ghee - 1 tbsp

Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Dried red chillies - 2
Toor dal - 1 tbsp
Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp
Asafoetida powder - 1/4 tsp






Method

Grind cumin seeds and black pepper to a coarse powder. Keep aside.

In a heavy bottomed pan, add 4 cups of water, tamarind, jaggery, turmeric powder, and salt bring to a boil. Simmer for about 5 minutes and add curry leaves.Stir and remove from heat.

In a kadai, heat ghee and add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add cumin - pepper powder , red chillies, dal, coriander seeds, asafotedia powder and stir. Pour it over the rasam. Boil for 2 minutes

Serve as a hot soup or with a bowl of hot rice.
